Music for the Soul

By: Dasha Directo

When we think of self-care, music usually isn’t an initial thought, but it should be. Music is powerful; it has the ability to transport you to a different place and a particular moment in time. The next time you’re feeling stressed or anxious, try turning on your favorite song. After all, music has been proven to increase levels of dopamine in our brain. There’s a song to match your mood and there’s a song to get you into the right mood if need be. Music can slow our heart rates and also increase them. You can get pumped or put yourself to sleep.

Create your own playlists and use it! Roll the windows down in your car and blast your favorite song. Put on that calming song right before bed. Blast an upbeat song while exercising.

Don’t think you need to listen to upbeat songs all the time to get you out of your funk. Sad songs are often appropriate, especially for those grieving a loved one or adjusting to a health crisis. Music can reinforce the emotions we are feeling and help us be able to process them better. There’s nothing wrong with crying to your favorite sad song.

Give yourself time to listen to your favorite music and give yourself time to discover new music as well. Take into consideration how certain songs make you feel and play those songs when you needed.
