Preventing Maternal Deaths Act of 2017 (H.R. 1318 of the 115th Congress)

Women in the United States are dying from pregnancy-related complications at a higher rate than women in 47 other countries. This alarming fact must be addressed; pregnancy must become safe. In March 2017, a bipartisan group of members of Congress introduced the Preventing Maternal Deaths Act of 2017 to support states in identifying the root causes of maternal death and severe morbidity. The AFE Foundation quickly announced their endorsement of the bill with an official letter of support.

However, to move the bill forward we urgently need your help. Members of Congress need to hear from you and your family to understand why it is necessary to identify proactive solutions to ensure no more moms or babies die from AFE or other complications of pregnancy. Read this summary of the bill.

The Honorable _________
U.S. House of Representatives Washington, DC 20515

Dear Representative ______ :

As a constituent and supporter of the AFE Foundation, I am writing to ask for your support of H.R. 1318, the Preventing Maternal Deaths Act of 2017. This bipartisan legislation supports states in their effort to identify the reasons why moms die during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, and use their findings to improve healthcare quality and savings, and ultimately inform change. This legislation is so urgently needed as women in the United States are needlessly dying from pregnancy-related complications at a higher rate than women in 47 other countries.

The U.S. maternal mortality rate continues to grow, and more women in the U.S. die from complications related to pregnancy than most other developed countries.

No mother should be lost or suffer harm bringing life into the world. [BRIEFLY EXPLAIN WHY THIS ISSUE IS SO IMPORTANT TO YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES.] It is critical that we better understand these issues, so we can prevent them from taking place in the future.

Thank you for your prompt consideration of my request to cosponsor the Preventing Maternal Deaths Act of 2017. To cosponsor the bill, please contact Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler’s (R-WA) office at 202-225-3536. I stand ready to work with you to achieve passage of this important legislation. Please contact me at [YOUR PHONE NUMBER] if I can be of assistance.
